Cold Forming of an Automotive Seating Bolt

EPS Engineered Parts Sourcing Inc was commissioned by an automotive client to fabricate a custom bolt fastener to be used in a seating track application. The design process offered many challenges, and we were determined to completely cold form the piece without costly secondary operations. The tooling was designed and fabricated with special consideration given to the "double D" shaped areas of the unit; the tolerance for this small 'D' flat diameter was tight at ±.0019 ". Our 2 die 3 blow National Cold Former was utilized to cold form the part out of 10B33/10B35 steel. Our cold forming equipment succeeded in maintaining the specific D area's tolerance, dimensions, and orientations for the part to work correctly.

The part was roll threaded and then completed with a heat treatment, an e-coat plating and an adhesive applied into the threaded portion of the bolt. In addition, automated camera sorting was used for part inspection before packaging. We currently manufacture 4,000,000 pieces annually for this client in Mexico.
