Cold Formed Steel Automotive Locking Bolt

EPS Engineered Parts Sourcing Inc was contracted by a customer in the automotive industry to design the tooling and perform the cold forming for the bolt highlighted here.

Designing the manufacturing method for this product was an involved process, as the goal was to fabricate the custom piece with as few operations as possible. Our engineers were able to accomplish a remarkable 4 die process, with no secondary operations necessary. This lowered the projected cost for our customer.

The needed tooling was fabricated, and our in-house 4 die 4 blow ½" National Bolt Maker was employed to cold form 1018 steel into the fastener. This part featured dimensions of 15mm x 13mm, with a tight tolerance of ±0.00155" for the shoulder diameter. Optical Sorting was utilized to test the unit for quality and accuracy. This is a high volume unit, with 500,000 pieces manufactured yearly and shipped to the client in Michigan. Typical turnaround time for a project of this magnitude is 8 - 10 weeks.
