Cold Forming of a Steel Automotive Collar Part

EPS Engineered Parts Sourcing Inc was approached by a customer in the automotive industry to convert the collar shown here from a screw machined part into a cold formed unit. Our engineering team developed the process and tooling for the piece. This was challenging for a number of reasons, particularly the "weld ring" around the collar had to be maintained for proper usage of the part. We were able to manipulate our existing machinery in order to create this large diameter part correctly, an achievement for both our engineers and cold forming team.

Our own 6 die 6 blow National Parts Former was utilized to construct the part from 1010 steel, just meeting the maximum diameter for cutoff. Overall dimensions of the collar are 25mm x 26mm with a wall thickness of ±0.004". The process was heavily monitored and tested along the way, using optical sorting to inspect for any defects and assure smoothness of the inside diameter surface. The piece was finished with a light oil to prevent corrosion, and shipped to the customer in Ohio. Turnaround time for this project is 10 - 12 weeks, and we maintain a yearly volume of 415,000 for this unit.
